DeFelsko Corporation, a leading U.S. Manufacturer of coating thickness gauges and inspection instruments, has been delivering simple, durable and accurate gauges since 1965. Family owned and operated from Northern New York, at their state of the art facility houses research, development, manufacturing, quality, sales, training and service departments.
Over the years, DeFelsko has pioneered many technologies including the first combination ferrous/non-ferrous gauge to automatically recognize the substrate and take a measurement and the first hand-held ultrasonic coating thickness gauge for non-metal substrates including plastic, wood and concrete.
Starting with the mechanical PosiTest FM and GM, a commitment to excellence in manufacturing and excellent after sales support is clearly displayed.
Coating thickness or dry film thickness (DFT) is an important variable that plays a role in product quality, process control, and cost control. Measurement of film thickness can be accomplished by selecting the best gauge for the particular application.
Surface profile – Steel is often abrasive blast cleaned or otherwise roughened prior to painting. The peak-to-valley height of the resultant surface profile is an important factor in the performance of applied protective coatings. Low profile may reduce coating bond strength (adhesion). Too high and the peaks may receive insufficient coverage and possibly rust prematurely. The costly application of more coating may be required if the profile is too high. For these reasons, surface profile should be measured prior to coating application to ensure that it meets contract specifications.
Environmental conditions during pre-treatment and application of a coating system are major factors affecting the long-term performance of coatings on steel structures. Meters can be used to monitor environmental conditions before, during and after painting. Ideal for surface preparation as required by ISO 8502-4, an electronic Dew Point Meter determines the likelihood of dew forming on structures which are being painted.
Salt contamination soluble salt testers measure the concentration of soluble salts (salt contamination) on metal surfaces in accordance with ISO 8502-6, 8502-9. To ensure a commercially acceptable end product ensure that your surfaces are to an acceptable level of salt contamination.
Pull-off Adhesion Testers measure adhesion of coatings to metal, wood, concrete and other rigid substrates.
In Situ Concrete Moisture (RH) meter.
Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges measures wall thickness of materials such as steel, plastic and more using ultrasonic technology. Ideal for measuring the effects of corrosion or erosion on tanks, pipes or any structure where access is limited to one side. Multiple echo (UTG M) thru-paint models measure the metal thickness of a painted structure without having to remove the coating.
Pinhole / Holiday detectors – After a protective coating has been applied, it is important to ensure there are no defects or discontinuities present that expose the substrate beneath. Small areas of thin or missing coating, called ‘pinholes’ or ‘holidays’, can become foci for corrosion and drastically reduce the life of a protective coating system. A holiday detector is a non-destructive instrument used for detecting these discontinuities, other names include pinhole detector, porosity detector, continuity tester, and holiday tester.
